FOR YOUR VERY OWN ON-LINE VINYL SIGN

Applying your own vinyl is so easy to do. With full instructions provided, making your sign is "easy as!"

  INTRODUCTION

Why make your own sign? As a nation of DIY'ers, I guess it's part of New Zealander's creative psyche to 'just get on and do it'. The joy of using your own efforts, doing it in your own time and in your own way, has a lot to do with it, and it's very satisfying! Cost factors play a big role as well, with significant savings to be made through doing it yourself.

I have developed a way to provide you, John Citizen, wishing to have a sign for your business, and/or home, vehicle, boat or caravan, with all the lettering and graphic images that you require to produce it. And, by following the detailed application instructions included, have a thoroughly professional looking sign that you can be truly proud of!

On the following pages are all the options to choose from... In a sign there are many details. Even the most simple of signs combine a number of parameters. Size, font or style of lettering, colour and look.

Take, for example, our banner heading above. To make this sign we need to have measured the size of the space onto which it is to be applied, allowing some space at each end. Then we need to make it using violet vinyl, and have it cut in Times Roman font. We also need to have the first letter of each word capitalised for the desired look. The reader will know then, that it is a title or identity.

Identity is probably the main reason for having a sign at the outset. I call it - putting your name up front! In our busy world, you need customers if you are in business, and you need them to find you - fast! It goes without saying, that putting your name up front in a busy shopping mall is obligatory; not displaying it could spell disaster for your business.

However, there are signs, and signs! There are the ones that pull the eye and instantly attract your prospective customers' attention, and there are those that - through poor design - are lost in the crowd and will only be seen if your prospective customer happens to be close to it already! There are signs that display some name or other, sometimes without any meaning, while others convey a description of your business in a word, or two! Obviously, a business or trade name that is so well known as to have become a "household name" will say it all, but for the average small shop or office, information must be given.

The trick is to keep it simple, and use a minimum of words. Graphic images, like pictures, speak a thousand words. Graphics are really important - if it is possible to include on the sign without it becoming "busy". Busy signs (one that have far too much on them) are hard to read. Some empty spaces can actually add emphasis to the message. Layout is a key issue here, along with choices of colour and contrast. Most important is the need to KEEP IT SIMPLE! Apply the KISS principle (Keep It Simple S...), and your sign will be more affective. Also, it is well known that most of us simply will not read more than a dozen or so words at a time; moreover, if you are a driver, you will only have a few seconds in which to read any sign - a few well-chosen words, and a simple graphic will need to do the trick...

In choosing words, one must take the objective view of the prospective customer. From her perspective, he or she will know what is sought. A descriptive sign will identify you with the customer's needs. A sign which merely states your name may not do this. Whilst I said, "put your name up front", it would be perhaps more accurate to put what you do, or sell 'up front'; the business name of secondary importance. Addresses and phone numbers are way down the pecking order. Some business names will do this in a word - Lytton West Bakery, Plumbing World, Dick Smith Electronics etc. are examples of what I mean.Conversely, Carter's is just a name - unless you already know what Carter's is all about.

Use of colour and style is both art and science. and a very important consideration. What colour is the building you occupy? What colours are used next door, or in the area? What kind of business do you have. Some colours are appropriate and some are not. The same applies to the choice of fonts or lettering styles. You would not find Commercial Script used by a circus!...

Getting down to it, then... clicking the link below "Options Index" will start this process. Follow the category link to the order form and then make your choice(s). Follow the instructions on the order form, and if satisfied with your choices, submit the completed form.

On the order form you will need to provide your email address (see below) - I will need to contact you directly by email, through which medium the rest of the process is followed. Questions and answers relating to your sign and your requirements may arise. Also I will need to quote for the vinyl you will require for the particular sign(s), and I will also provide banking details...

Signwriting has never been straight-forward, so I've tried to make the web-site as simple as possible, to help avoid mistakes and misunderstandings.  I have also steered clear of "shopping carts" and credit card transactions, which can add cost.

Welcome! Enjoy! I know you will be satisfied in the end...

     PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Vinyl sign prepared and ready to apply

Sign Vinyl comes to you like this. The lettering has been cut out and the waste removed. Then we covered it all over with sticky paper. When the sign is applied, this sticky paper holds all the letters and parts of a graphic image in place. This guarantees accurate positioning of the individual parts. After the lettering has been positioned correctly on the substrate - your sign board or other surface - and smoothed down, this paper can be finally removed to reveal your sign in all its glory!
